Ithaca City of Asylum Website

Mission

Ithaca City of Asylum (ICOA) joins a worldwide network of Cities of Asylum, supporting writers whose works are suppressed, whose lives are threatened, whose cultures are vanishing, and whose languages are endangered.

Description of Work

Working in partnership with Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges, ICOA welcomes exiled writers to Ithaca. Each writer is invited for a two-year period. During that time, the writer is employed part-time by Cornell University, which provides a living stipend, health insurance, and visa sponsorship. ICOA provides housing, furnishing, and social support to the writer and his or her family.
